Simple Exterior House Paint Ideas from the Single Mom

posted on 30 May 2011

Going thru a tragedy in your life is really a hard thing to do. A tragedy like a divorce can really tear your family and house apart. One of the ways I have dealt with this tragedy in my life is to exert all my energies into beautifying my home. I started with the exteriors of my home. I didn’t want my house to look gloomy so I had my house repainted in bright pastel colors. Now that I have the freedom to do whatever I wanted with my house I decided to use a Mediterranean theme for my décor. I got the exterior house paint ideas from a home improvement show I saw on TV. The house was painted in lemon yellow with the roof and awning in ball pen blue ink. Small details like the borders of windows and the front door were painted in a lighter shade of blue to match the color of the roof. This gave my home a happier façade that surely made it cozier for me and the kids.

Pendant Lighting Ideas for Professional Kitchens

posted on 2 May 2011

For some kitchen professionals nothing beats industrial lights when it comes to lighting up a kitchen. These lights have aluminum housings with long tubes of fluorescent lights. You will often find this type of lighting in professional kitchens that is situated in a restaurant or in a food processing factory. It may provide ample lighting but it is not as attractive to look at compared to pendant lighting made of a round lamp with a fancy shade as cover. Here is one of the pendant lighting ideas that I saw from a home improvement magazine. It incorporates the look of industrial lighting with a pendant design. The industrial light is made in a size smaller than the usual and hangs from the ceiling right above a kitchen island. Because this light hangs lower than the ceiling it provides the kitchen island a brighter illumination. With a smaller size it doesn’t look as garish as the ones you see in the dirty kitchen of a restaurant.

Important Tips to Go By When Creating your Bathroom Ceramic Floor Design

posted on 29 April 2011

A lot of work and a lot of thought should go into your designs, especially when working with a material like ceramic tiles! If you’re just about to begin designing, then here are some important tips to follow so you could come up with a great bathroom ceramic floor design: When it comes to color schemes and themes, try to be as creative and bold as possible! Cream or off white is always a safe choice, but wouldn’t it be more interesting to go for bright blues or shades of blue green? You could also add accents and little pops of color here and there. For instance, you could make some tiles bigger than the other and in a different color, too. You should also think about what kinds of tile to use. Glazed tiles are stain resistant and look better. On the other hand, unglazed ones are safer and keep you from slipping. They require constant cleaning and maintenance, though, as they tend to absorb stains. Finally, take into consideration the sealant you will use. Some of them can actually seal in grout, so be cautious about that!

The Hot Summer Days of My Childhood

posted on 19 April 2011

Being young and living out in the country we used to have the best time. From dawn until dusk my brother, sister, and I would play outside. The sun shone through the trees as we played tag, rode our bikes, or even played in our pool splashing about. The best time was just lying under the shade of the big maple trees my parents had in the yard. Sometimes my mum would get out the gingham fabric and we'd have ourselves a picnic. The rays of sunshine radiated through the trees with the sun kissing your body, the wind blowing so keep you just cool enough, and being able to relax in the quiet after a day of playing and running. Mom would always bring out Kool-Aid or lemonade so we could rehydrate with sugar, I think it was to keep us outside so she could clean, but whatever the motives it was still appreciated. Ah to be young and wild and free, to enjoy the days of carelessness again.

Go From Kitschy to Cool With Modern Kitchen Furniture

posted on 13 April 2011

Back in the day, the kitchen used to be a place for doting mothers or grandmothers that prepare warm, home-cooked meals every night for their families. Nowadays, it’s become much more than that. It is no longer a place limited to the archetypical moms, as absolutely anyone could become a star chef nowadays. For others, the kitchen could even be considered a status symbol. The bigger, shinier and more expensive your kitchen appliances are, the richer you are! If your kitchen looks like it’s stuck in those olden days and hasn’t quite caught up with the times, then maybe you should start investing in some new kitchen furniture! You could replace that old, crumbly table with a more modern, glass one. You can also get some new appliances. There are plenty of them in the market that are made to be both fashionable and highly functional. By improving the look of your kitchen, even just little by little, you can go from kitschy to cool!

My Own Personal Grand Design Complete with French Reclamation Items

posted on 9 April 2011

I'm a fan of Grand Designs - you know, the show on Channel 4 where you see these people with seemingly unlimited budgets to build some wacky house. 10 minutes before the show ends, they're in dire straits - everything looks like it's going to hell - then of course, with just a few minutes of each show left, they somehow get it all together to complete their wonderful design. It's with that show in mind that we went for our own Grand design - complete with French reclamation items we've bought over the years. We have bought a plot of land near us in Leicestershire, and have the planning approval to build our house. At this stage, it's nothing more than a 3D drawing, but over the next 6 months we plan to make it a reality, with our lovely antiques ready to fill up the spaces both inside and outside the house!

The Heart of My House: the Kitchen

posted on 6 March 2011

My family's favorite place in our home is the kitchen. Kitchens are a place where families can sit down, talk and eat together - it's the one place you can truly commune. We all love to talk around the dinner table and the boys really open up when it's time to eat. My kitchen is very open, with several cupboards with plenty of storage. I have all the small kitchen appliances that you can think of. I have the family sized fryer, rice cooker/steamer (which I use everyday), a fabulous mixer, along with all your other basic appliances. My kids love to help me with all if the cooking and baking. They all huddle around the island and help wherever they can, whether its opening up cans and dumping the contents into the pan or using the cookie cutters to make the all time favorite, sugar cookies. Of course, our kitchen isn't only used for the typical cooking, preparing of food and eating together, we also use it for family craft time and homework. After snacktime, the kitchen table is transformed into a place where the kids sit down and do their homework for the day. Our kitchen is not only the center of our house but it is the heart! It's where all of the fun things happen and many memories are made. I am hoping that my kids will take what they have learned in our kitchen and pass the good times down to their children. Every family needs to take the time to share their day and there is no better place to do that then right in the heart of the house.

Adding A Wooden Deck With Railings To My Back Garden

posted on 4 March 2011

I have just finished building my house - it's exactly what I wanted - I just now need to save enough money to build a deck. While the house is perfect, having a deck off my back garden would improve everything - I would like to have wood or wood effect flooring, wooden balconies, and a couple of steps down to my lawn. While I have the skills - I work as a roofer for a roofing services company, I will need some help with this deck. I would like the deck to be built with mahogany wood, which stands up to the sun and rain well without too much buckling or swelling. I would also go for a wax stain rather than a varnish to make upkeep easier. Once my deck is built I just need to then decorate it with some choice garden furniture, and a whole array of flowers - they will mainly be in red clay pots, with brightly coloured petals, and in my vision they will also all be beautifully fragrent.

On Transforming My House When I Retire

posted on 15 February 2011

Thinking about some changes, I would first like to build a bedroom groundfloor with an attached bathroom. It is better to take reclaim some of the living room space for this. It is my dream to make a beautiful garden and a courtyard. The garden must contain red and white flowers and a pool in the middle with a small fountain. In the courtyard I would like to put concrete chairs and some show pieces with some antique touch. I'd get some pop up marquees for special occasions too as I like to have outdoor parties - much better than inside which can quickly get too stuffy with so many people. So many DIY plans, so little time and money - but I am saving up my money to get on with these plans - and since I'll be retiring in two years, I think then would be the perfect time to transform my house and garden.
