In the final analysis, the last line of defense in support of freedom and the Constitution consists of the people themselves. If the people want to be free, if they want to lift themselves out from underneath a state apparatus that threatens their liberties, squanders their resources on needless wars, destroys the value of their dollar, and spews forth endless propaganda about how indispensable it is and how lost we would all be without it, there is no force that can stop them. The time has come to act on these words. May future generations look back on our work and say that these were men and women who, in a moment of great crisis, stood up to the politicians, the opinion-molders, and the establishment, and saved their country.

- Congressman Ron E. Paul, 2008.

E. Wayne Johnson for Alderman - Urbana City Council - Ward 7

WHY AM I A CANDIDATE?
I am getting involved because I don’t want to watch from the sidelines any longer.  I am not pleased with the Urbana government and I don’t care for its well-earned reputation for authoritarianism.  This is our Home Town and We are its People, not Servants, Subjects, nor Slaves.  Expenditures by the City are increasing 6 to 7% per year, while Revenues, projected to grow at 3 to 4% per year, may be flat or even decline in the near term.  A sense of Fiscal Responsibility in spending is essential; otherwise those of us alive and remaining in the city will be forced to pay higher and higher taxes.  We already have the highest taxation rates in the area.  I cannot stand idly by and just watch.

WHY AM I RUNNING AS AN INDEPENDENT?
I don’t find that any existing political party fully supports the principles of liberty, small government, and personal responsibility.  Government should establish by the grassroots consent of the people in their communities and according to their wishes, not the dictates of any top-down political party.

IF Elected, I Will Work to –

•    Reduce the size and scope of Urbana City Government

•    Return to Common-Sense Principles-Based Approach in City Government

•    Stabilize and Reduce Taxation through Fiscal Responsibility and Restraint in Spending.

•    Promote a People-Friendly and Business/Innovation Friendly Environment, which is natural, becoming, and appropriate for a small yet progressive Midwestern university city.

•    Support a Proactive Community Approach to Crime Prevention and Safety.

•    Maintain Full Transparency so that every citizen can know and understand what the City Government is doing, the effect of new rules and regs and how the People’s money is spent.

•    Promote Intellectual, Spiritual, and Personal development for all citizens.

•    Help Prepare Our People to Cope with and Prosper in Difficult or Uncertain Economic Times.
